Keeping computer networks secure is a complex task, especially when separating a company’s network from the public Internet or dividing an intranet into multiple zones with varying security requirements. Typically, the network security policies that dictate these requirements are presented in a high-level form, but enforcement occurs through low-level security mechanisms, often using firewall technology. Unfortunately, this creates a significant gap between the two levels of security policy, making tasks like transformation, maintenance, verification, and modification difficult. This work helps to understand this problem and proposes a solution. Specifically, ConfigMaker – a firewall management toolkit – is introduced to simplify the process.
